Here in Helsinki we since 2005 run a new research programme, the Health Promotion Research Programme at the Folkhalsan Research Centre which was established some 40 years ago and is the biggest non governmental research unit in Finland. The focus of this programme is to develop a peak competence on salutogenic research. Our first step was to undertake a systematic review of the research area. The first report on this was published in May 2007 (Eriksson M. Unravelling the Mystery of Salutogenesis) and at the same time defended as an academic thesis. We continue this review and intend to make the research database available to members of the working group and also have an open access area.

Unravelling the Mystery of Salutogenesis – New Thesis

The research synthesis concludes the salutogenic theory to be a valuable approach for public health and health promotion researchand practice. The thesis itself can serve as an introduction to the salutogenic research framework and a handbook for the research community.

The Health Promotion
Research Programme

The Folkhälsan Health Promotion Research Programme in Helsinki led a new Thematic Working Group on the Salutogenesis. The new task – given by the central international professional and research organisation in health promotion IUHPE (International Union on Health Promotion and Education) – aims to create a worldwide research network and to develop a communication system on Salutogenesis as a leading concept within and beyond the health promotion community. So, if you are interested, please join in!
